In light of ICE stepping up interior “enforcement”, I thought I would republish a piece I wrote last year about what we know about the undocumented population of the United States.
Looking at the economic facts, immigrants of basically all kinds are so clearly beneficial to the US. It's hard to square the obvious economic benefits of (even undocumented) immigration with the broad public dissatisfaction. I read you and I'm like "duh, of course!" But obviously many people disagree.
I want to hear the Lauren Gilbert Steelman Argument For Why Immigration is Actually Bad for the US. In the interest of understanding the mix of economic and cultural beliefs that would lead someone to read this article but still say "nope, I think the US does not benefit from the presence of undocumented people."
