As you may have read, President Trump announced last night that the issuance of a H-1B visa will now come with a $100,000 fee. This is up from around $3,400, a 25x increase.
Small nit/question: aren't almost all postdocs on J1s? Anecdotally, I've only ever met a single H1B postdoc which as because he need to collaborate with industry in a very specific way.
Not that this changes the point about the H1B for non-profits.
It looks like 80-90% of postdocs are on J-1s, so the postdocs I've me on H-1Bs are unusual. I'll edit to many postdocs, and also note that TT faculty tend to be on H-1Bs.
This proclamation might be a stick in trade negotiations with India. It affects IT services companies of India and in general affects many Indian immigrants to the US. I believe Indians are a big portion of the H1B grantees.

I'd count this as a small error; as per my bug bounty (https://www.laurenpolicy.com/p/announcing-a-bug-bounty-for-this), happy to donate $10 to a charity of your choice.
That's very generous! Since you're UK-based, I'd love it if you donated to Cancer Research UK.
I agree, TT faculty I've met are usually H1Bs, so no doubt it'll hit university recruitment.
Done!
